The Payroll is the periodic calculation and display of an employee's Arbeitsentgelt. It shows how the gross salary is composed, which tax, social security and, where applicable, further deductions are taken into account and what net salary or payout amount results from this.

What is a payslip?

A Payroll clearly shows the salary components of an employee that are relevant to a specific Payroll period.

It contains in particular details of the gross pay, tax and social security deductions, and the resulting net pay. Further remuneration, deductions or offsets may mean that the actual payout amount differs from the net pay.

The Payroll therefore refers to the specific payslip for an employee and a certain period. It is to be distinguished from the overarching Payroll accounting.

What components does a Payroll contain?

The exact structure can vary depending on Employment relationship and the billing context. Typically, however, a Payroll contains the following basic details:

  • Details of employee and employer
  • Billing period
  • Gross salary and, where applicable, further salary components
  • tax deductions
  • Employee contributions to Social security
  • where applicable, further allowances or deductions
  • net pay
  • Payout amount

Depending on the billing, additional billing-related information or accumulated values may also be shown.

Gross, net and take-home pay

The starting point for Payroll is the respective gross remuneration. This can be made up of fixed and variable remuneration components.

After taking into account the relevant tax and social security deductions, the net remuneration is determined.

The actual payout amount may additionally be influenced by further allowances, deductions or offsets.

In short: The Payroll makes it clear how gross pay develops through the respective deductions into net pay and finally the payout amount.

Payroll and Payroll accounting – what is the difference?

Payroll and Payroll accounting are often mentioned together, but they do not refer to the same thing.

The Payroll is the specific calculation of the Arbeitsentgelt for an employee and a specific Payroll period.

By contrast, the Payroll accounting refers to the overarching professional area in which, among other things, billing-relevant employee data are processed, payrolls are generated and the associated wage-related accounting and reporting procedures are handled.

In short: The Payroll is the individual billing, whereas the Payroll accounting is the overarching business area.

Payroll and Payroll – what is the difference?

The terms Payroll and Payroll are often used similarly in everyday language.

Traditionally, „Lohn“ (wage) is more commonly associated with variable or hourly pay, and „Gehalt“ (salary) with a fixed monthly payment.

However, both terms fundamentally describe the billing of Remuneration. They show the respective remuneration components, deductions and the resulting payout amount.
